At DBTS, our heartbeat is to exalt God by expounding his word. From your very first class, you’ll see that our respect for the Word of God runs deep. Study in one of the best theological libraries in the region, dialogue with professors both in class and in their offices, and build ministry relationships to last a lifetime.
In DBTS classes, you’ll experience academic excellence in a warm, personal setting. Our professors engage with some of the top theological scholars in the country, yet they are also grounded in their local church and eager to connect your theological knowledge with practical ministry.
Classes take place in 2-hour blocks 7:30 – noon, Tuesday through Friday. The typical class meets once a week. This schedule gives students the ability to customize a class schedule compatible with work and ministry obligations.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, we take a short break from academic studies to worship with fellow students and professors through music and preaching from area pastors and professors.
When studying at DBTS, you’ll have access to the finest theological library in the region. With 50,000 physical volumes, subscriptions to over 200 journals, and access to hundreds more via our online databases, students can surround themselves with the greatest theological thinkers both past and present.
Enjoy fellowship with area pastors and professors at our annual events, each designed to equip and encourage the local church. You can watch and listen to past conferences here:
We believe that students best learn how to serve the church through real local church ministry. The seminary’s purpose is to train students to think deeply and accurately about theology and church ministry. But that training will never substitute for hands-on ministry in a local church community. The local church, rather than the seminary, is central to the lives of our students.
In addition to Inter-City Baptist, the greater Detroit area includes a variety of like-minded churches ranging from church plants in inner-city settings to established churches, many of which are pastored by DBTS graduates.
Prepare for ministry in a community that gives you a taste of the global mission field. From urban and rural settings, college campuses like Wayne State or the University of Michigan, and immigrant communities from all around the world, metro Detroit has it all.
In recent years, the Detroit area has attracted many from countries in the 10/40 Window. The Detroit area is now home to one of the largest Arab populations in the country, and the city of Hamtramck, MI, was the first city to elect a majority Muslim city council.
Depending on where you choose to settle, you’ll have opportunities to live and work among people from diverse religious, cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds, preparing you to serve and love wherever God calls you.
We love Detroit and Southeast Michigan and we think you will too. Ten years after Detroit made headlines for the fallout of the economic downturn, it’s a city on the rise with a comeback story. It now offers big city living with a low cost of living. From its beautiful downtown restoration to its vibrant and growing immigrant communities, you’ll sense the pride Detroiters have in their city and will maybe even want to say nice things about Detroit too.
Visiting campus is a great way to get all of your questions answered and connect with DBTS. If you’re a prospective student, we invite you to join us for a class day and weekend. Please contact us, and we’ll handle all the details. We look forward to hosting you during your visit.
