ACBC Certification

Become a Biblical Counselor

Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary has been officially recognized as a training center for the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, becoming the first training center in the lower peninsula of Michigan. DBTS is now able to help men and women who desire to assist people with God’s truth pursue certification with ACBC.

Process

The certification process consists of three phases: learning, exams and application, and supervision. At DBTS, there are two paths that interested students can pursue in working through these three phases.

Path #1
MDiv Concentration in Biblical Counseling

The first path is our biblical counseling concentration in the Master of Divinity program. Upon completion of the following courses in that program, the MDiv students in that concentration will fulfill the requirements for ACBC certification.

Phase 1 (Learning) and 2 (Exams and Application)

  • PT520 Introduction to Biblical Counseling
  • PT527 Marriage and Family Counseling
  • PT535 Biblical Counseling Problems and Procedures

Phase 3 (Supervision)

  • PT611 Biblical Counseling Practicum I
  • PT612 Biblical Counseling Practicum II

Path #2
Non-Degree Counseling Certification

The second path for pursuing ACBC certification at DBTS is designed for men and women who are not pursuing a seminary degree, or for seminary students not in the biblical counseling concentration. Upon completion of the following courses, students will fulfill the requirements for ACBC certification.

Phase 1 (Learning)

  • PT521 Foundations of Biblical Counseling*
  • PT522 Basics of Biblical Counseling

Phase 2 (Exams and Application)

  • PT610 Biblical Counseling Observation and Exams

Phase 3 (Supervision)

  • PT611 Biblical Counseling Practicum I
  • PT612 Biblical Counseling Practicum II

*MDiv students are not required to take this course.

We are excited to be able to strengthen the training we provide in biblical counseling at DBTS and offer this additional benefit to our students.
